Thích Nhất Hạnh

For 42 years, Thích Nhất Hạnh has guided me in becoming a more peaceful, loving man. That hasn’t been easy. There have been days where this has been profoundly challenging. But teachers like him, living from the very heart of peace and love, have been invaluable. He taught me to silently affirm in another’s presence:
“Darling, I am here for you.
Darling, I know you are there and it makes me happy.
Darling, I know you suffer.
Darling, I suffer, please help.”
He is a renowned Zen master who lived love moment by moment for much of his 95 years. I still hear his voice:
“Breathing in, I calm my body and mind. Breathing out, I smile. Dwelling in the present moment, I know this is the only moment.”
“If we are not fully ourselves, truly in the present moment, we miss everything.”
“When you love someone, the best thing you can offer is your presence. How can you love if you are not there?”
“You must love in such a way that the person you love feels free.”
This painting is a meditation on the peace and love he instilled in me. His face emerges from fiery reds, golds, oranges…like enlightenment glowing through chaos. Hands in prayer, eyes soft yet piercing, he radiates quiet power. Textured strokes make his presence feel alive, still breathing.
This portrait honors the man who transformed challenge into grace, suffering into compassion, ordinary into sacred.
His teachings whisper: stay present, love freely, be peace.
In this painting, he continues to live and teach.
