Lose Yourself in Love

Many years ago, Ram Dass told me a story about how his guru asked him to meditate like Jesus. When he asked “How did Jesus meditate?” his guru replied, with rivers of tears rolling down his face: “He lost himself in love.”
For me, this painting reveals that quality of meditation and prayer. To lose myself in love is to expose a sacred erotic truth: being claimed is not control. It is the most daring surrender to the deeper pull of two nervous systems recognizing truth. They settle into each other because soul and body know this is the most honest expression possible. And they are brave enough to let themselves be lost in it.
The fire inside them arises naturally from truth and trust. It arises from God-intoxication.
Nothing is explained.
Nothing is withheld.
This painting is about the most courageous form of contact: being utterly undefended, transparent, revealing, honest. The kind of truth that makes faces blush, hearts shimmer, eyes shine, skin glow…radiant from inner honesty and luminosity. This is holding each other while being held by something infinitely larger, freer, more whole than either of us.
There is a moment of devotion where something rare awakens. The separate self falls away, replaced by splendor felt in and around the field of our union.
It is the splendor of Love loving Itself as us.
When we are no longer only committed to each other but simultaneously dissolved into joy. We become the infinite. The thrill of giving our entire being without holding back is fully, enthusiastically received. The equal thrill of receiving our beloved freely offering their all in surrender to generosity expressing itself as their entire body and being. Tenderness given not with caution, but with exuberant gratitude. Closeness becomes an ever-widening field rather than a peak followed by a valley.
Here we are not just standing in love. We are continuously falling in love.
Here, love is not held tightly.
It is everything. It is celebrated. It is revered.
Here, the sublime euphoria of loving each other…of reaching beyond to be closer, more available, more present with the pleasure and joy of losing ourselves in love shines. We are open and saturated with ever-greater intimacy and caring. Here, we welcome each other into the very depth, the very core of our soul and being.
